Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR) has resumed copper shipments from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following the successful repair of flood-damaged railway infrastructure along the strategic Lobito Corridor.

The arrival of the first copper train from the DRC marks the reopening of a critical export route that had been disrupted for nearly two months after severe flooding damaged sections of track in Angola.

The restoration is expected to strengthen the movement of critical minerals from Central Africa to international markets, reinforcing the Lobito Corridor’s growing importance in global supply chains.

Critical Minerals Route Back in Operation

The Lobito Corridor connects the mineral-rich copper and cobalt belt of the DRC to the Atlantic port of Lobito in Angola, providing an alternative export route to traditional southern African transport corridors.

Operations were suspended after heavy rains caused significant damage to railway infrastructure near the Halo River between Cubal and Caimbambo, approximately 140 kilometres southeast of Benguela. Additional flooding also affected sections of the railway near the Cavaco River.

During the disruption, Lobito Atlantic Railway implemented contingency measures to maintain cargo movement by transferring freight between rail and road transport on either side of the damaged sections.

The reopening now allows full rail operations to resume, restoring efficiency and reducing transportation costs for mining companies exporting minerals through the corridor.

Supporting Africa’s Critical Minerals Supply Chain

The Lobito Corridor has emerged as one of Africa’s most strategically important infrastructure projects as demand for critical minerals such as copper and cobalt continues to rise.

Copper remains essential for renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, power transmission networks and industrial manufacturing, while cobalt plays a key role in battery production and energy storage technologies.

The corridor has attracted significant international interest as Western governments and development institutions seek to strengthen access to critical minerals required for the global energy transition.

By linking Central Africa’s mining sector directly to Atlantic shipping routes, the corridor provides exporters with improved market access and reduced logistical bottlenecks.

Infrastructure Resilience Under the Spotlight

The successful restoration of rail services highlights the importance of infrastructure resilience as climate-related weather events increasingly impact transport networks across Africa.

According to Lobito Atlantic Railway, emergency repair works enabled the damaged sections to be restored within weeks, allowing mineral exports to resume despite the challenges posed by severe flooding.

Company officials described the return of international freight traffic as a testament to the resilience of the railway operation and the commitment of its technical teams.

Growing Role in Regional Trade

The Lobito Corridor is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting regional trade, mining exports and economic integration between Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.

As investments in critical mineral production continue to accelerate across Central Africa, efficient transport infrastructure is becoming essential for maintaining reliable supply chains and attracting further investment into the mining sector.

The resumption of copper shipments signals renewed momentum for one of Africa’s most important mineral export corridors and reinforces the strategic significance of the Lobito route in the global critical minerals market.
