South Africa’s avocado industry is expected to produce and ship close to 21 million cartons this season despite challenging market conditions and increased competition from Peru in key international markets.
The projected volume represents an improvement on the previous season, providing some encouragement for growers following what industry observers have described as a difficult marketing environment.
Europe remains South Africa’s primary export destination, but strong supplies from Peru have increased competition and placed pressure on market conditions.
South African exporters have also expanded their presence in Asian markets in recent years, although access remains challenging in some destinations.
Derek Donkin of Subtrop said competition remained particularly difficult in China because of Peruvian supplies, while high import tariffs continue to limit South Africa’s competitiveness in India compared with fruit from Tanzania.
With international markets facing increased competition, late-season South African growers are expected to place greater emphasis on the domestic market.
Demand for avocados among South African consumers has expanded significantly in recent years, with retailers reporting that the fruit has become an increasingly regular part of household shopping.
Bulk-pack offerings have also contributed to growing domestic consumption, providing growers with an additional market as export conditions remain challenging.
South Africa’s domestic avocado supply follows a seasonal pattern. The country typically imports avocados from producers such as Tanzania during December and January, when local availability is lower.
From February through November or December, however, domestic production is generally sufficient to meet local demand.
The combination of rising domestic consumption and nearly 21 million cartons of expected production gives South African growers multiple outlets for their crop, although competition in international markets is likely to remain an important factor in returns during the season.
