Cape Town, South Africa - February 24, 2023: Nissan E-Power electric vehicles on display

Nissan Motor Corporation is set to invest approximately $45 million to expand its vehicle production operations in Egypt, strengthening its manufacturing base and export capacity across Africa.

The expansion project includes the addition of a new production line that will increase output by at least 10,000 vehicles annually, representing roughly a one-third boost in local production capacity. The company’s existing plant in western Cairo currently produces around 30,000 vehicles per year.

According to Nissan Africa Managing Director Mohamed AbdelSamad, more than 50% of components for the new production line will be sourced locally, supporting Egypt’s broader industrialisation and localisation strategy.

The investment reflects Nissan’s growing focus on Egypt as a regional manufacturing and export hub for African markets. Over the past three years, Nissan Egypt has exported more than 25,000 vehicles across the continent, with Libya remaining its largest export destination.

The expansion comes as Nissan continues a global restructuring programme aimed at improving profitability following significant financial losses in previous fiscal periods. The strategy includes cost optimisation, plant restructuring and a shift toward more efficient production bases.

Egypt has positioned itself as a competitive manufacturing hub after addressing a prolonged foreign currency shortage through international financial support. The country is also pursuing a manufacturing-led growth strategy aimed at reducing its trade deficit and boosting exports.

Egypt is also expected to benefit from potential opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which could further strengthen intra-African automotive trade and supply chains.

Nissan has already invested approximately $276 million in Egypt and continues to evaluate logistics strategies to maintain stable export flows amid regional disruptions affecting global shipping routes.

The expansion also aligns with Nissan’s broader mobility strategy, which includes increased adoption of AI-driven technologies and a streamlined global product lineup aimed at improving efficiency and competitiveness in key markets.
