Severe flooding in Angola has forced the suspension of rail operations along the critical Lobito Corridor, disrupting a major export route for copper and cobalt from Central Africa. Heavy rains damaged infrastructure near the coastal city of Benguela, leading to an indefinite halt in operations by the Lobito Atlantic Railway.
The Lobito Corridor is a key logistics link connecting mining operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia to Atlantic export markets. It plays a vital role in transporting copper and cobalt, while also supporting the movement of essential mining inputs such as sulphur into the region.
The disruption is expected to impact major mining companies operating in the Central African copperbelt, including First Quantum Minerals, Barrick Mining, and Ivanhoe Mines. These companies rely heavily on efficient export routes to move mineral concentrates to global markets, and any delays could create supply bottlenecks.
The Lobito Corridor has been a strategic infrastructure project backed by international partners, including the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, the African Development Bank, and Africa Finance Corporation. It is seen as an important alternative to other export routes and a way to improve trade efficiency across the region.
Beyond exports, the rail line is also crucial for importing materials needed for mining operations. Disruptions to sulphur supplies, a key input in copper processing, could affect production levels if the outage continues, prompting companies to reassess operations and logistics.
If repairs take longer than expected, mining companies may be forced to shift to alternative routes, including transport corridors running east toward the Indian Ocean. However, these routes are longer and less efficient, which could increase costs and further strain supply chains.
The situation highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to climate-related disruptions and underscores the importance of resilient logistics systems in supporting Africa’s mining sector and global mineral supply chains.
