Ukraine has officially opened the Côte d’Ivoire market to exports of Ukrainian meat products, marking a significant step in expanding agri-food trade flows between Eastern Europe and West Africa.

According to the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, the two countries have agreed on veterinary certificates covering the export of fresh, frozen and processed beef, lamb and poultry meat, as well as products derived from these categories.

The agreement establishes the regulatory framework required for Ukrainian producers to begin supplying Côte d’Ivoire, one of West Africa’s fastest-growing consumer markets with rising demand for animal protein.

Veterinary certification unlocks market access

Under the new arrangements, Ukraine and Côte d’Ivoire have aligned sanitary and veterinary standards, allowing eligible Ukrainian exporters to access the Ivorian market subject to compliance with agreed food safety and animal health requirements.

Serhiy Tkachuk, head of the Ukrainian food safety authority, said the development reflects growing international confidence in Ukraine’s regulatory systems.

“The opening of the first markets for exporting meat products to Côte d’Ivoire is another step in expanding the presence of Ukrainian producers on international markets,” Tkachuk said. “It is the result of consistent work by our agency together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Ukrainian diplomatic missions and relevant ministries, and it confirms trust in Ukraine’s food safety control system.”

Opportunities for African food supply chains

For Côte d’Ivoire, the move supports efforts to diversify food import sources and strengthen protein supply chains amid population growth and rising urban demand. Poultry and beef consumption across West Africa has increased steadily over the past decade, driven by income growth and changing diets.

Ukraine is a major global exporter of agricultural commodities, and industry analysts say the addition of meat products could enhance its role as a competitive supplier of affordable animal protein to African markets, particularly where cold-chain infrastructure is improving.

Export conditions and compliance

Exports of Ukrainian meat and poultry products to Côte d’Ivoire will be subject to several regulatory conditions. Exporters must be registered with Ivorian authorities and obtain an export permit from Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Animal Resources and Water Resources before shipments commence.

In addition, each consignment must receive an import permit issued prior to dispatch, ensuring traceability and compliance with national veterinary and food safety rules.

The Ukrainian agency noted that only approved establishments meeting hygiene, processing and cold-chain requirements will be eligible to export under the new framework.

Strengthening Africa–Ukraine agri-trade

The opening of the Ivorian market aligns with Ukraine’s broader strategy to deepen agricultural trade with Africa, where demand for food imports continues to grow amid climate pressures and domestic production constraints in some countries.

For African importers, the agreement introduces a new supply option for meat and poultry products, potentially improving price stability and food availability. For Ukrainian producers, it provides access to a strategic West African gateway with strong regional trade connections.

As Africa’s food markets continue to globalise, agreements such as this highlight the increasing role of diversified agri-trade partnerships in supporting food security, market resilience and economic cooperation across regions.
