Kenya is positioning itself for a new phase of export expansion following a preliminary trade agreement with the People’s Republic of China, under which 98.2 % of Kenyan export goods will receive zero-duty access into China’s market. The deal, announced in mid-January, marks a potentially significant shift in East Africa’s trade landscape by opening additional opportunities for Kenyan manufacturers and agricultural exporters.

Zero-Duty Access Boosts Export Potential

Under the terms of the preliminary agreement, Kenya’s manufacturers of textiles, apparel, leather goods, processed foods and horticultural products will be able to export with minimal tariff barriers, enhancing their price competitiveness in one of the world’s largest consumer markets. Exporters in the horticulture sector, which already commands strong sales to Europe and the Middle East, are expected to benefit from improving scale and diversification into Asia.

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Investment, Trade and Industry emphasised that the duty-free provisions would encourage Kenyan export firms to scale production, optimise supply chains and pursue product quality upgrades aligned with Chinese market standards.

Strengthening Kenya-China Economic Ties

The agreement builds on sustained trade engagement between Kenya and China. The partnership follows high-level visits and cooperation on infrastructure financing, logistics corridor development and value chain integration. Analysts highlight that export-oriented sectors including agro-processing and light manufacturing stand to be among the biggest beneficiaries of enhanced market access.

Addressing Export Competitiveness Challenges

Despite the opportunities, obstacles remain. Kenyan exporters must navigate non-tariff barriers such as stringent quality certification requirements, supply chain compliance issues and heightened competition from regional producers. Strengthening cold-chain logistics and improving production efficiencies are seen as critical success factors for Kenyan agri-exports targeting China.

For ExportFocus Africa, the Kenya–China preliminary trade deal stands out as a promising export catalyst—particularly for value-added manufactured goods and agricultural products seeking scale in Asia’s vast consumer markets.
