BMG specialists work closely customers in all industries – particularly in bulk materials handling applications – to ensure compliance with stringent safety legislation. A key focus of this initiative is the prevention of roll-back incidents, which can lead to serious injuries during conveying operations.
“As part of our commitment to ensuring optimum safety standards, BMG keeps abreast with changing safety regulations. The company’s technical team provides expert advice on selection of the correct components for specific applications and assists with precise installation techniques. This ensures optimal performance, reduced downtime and enhanced safety,” explains Carlo Beukes, Business Unit Manager, BMG’s Power Transmission division. “Tsubaki backstops and cam clutches – developed and manufactured in Japan to the highest quality standards – are designed for efficiency and safety in both high- and low-speed applications.
“These robust components meet all current safety legislation, including local requirements for incline conveyor belts to incorporate anti run-back or run-on devices, preventing injuries caused by falling material.”
Tsubaki backstops and cam clutches are engineered to prevent reverse rotation of drive shafts, providing a reliable and cost-effective solution to protect equipment and personnel. These components are used in many sectors, including mining, timber, pulp, grain, cement and metals handling, in applications including belt conveyors, bucket elevators, drift conveyors and screw pumps.
Tsubaki cam clutches are available from BMG in a variety of capacities and configurations, designed for the three primary operating modes: overrunning, indexing and backstopping. Their inner and outer races, made from high-quality alloy steel, offer exceptional hardness and toughness – ideal for heavy-duty conditions. Precision-ground surfaces ensure concentricity, while cams manufactured from high-alloy steel, deliver hardness values up to 2500 Hv for reliable performance.
One of the standout product lines in BMG’s Tsubaki portfolio is the BS-F Series – specifically designed for high-speed, inclined and long overland conveyor systems. These high-torque, narrow-width backstops are direct replacements for traditional roller ramp systems, simplifying installation and reducing downtime. The drop-in design allows for quick substitution, with no need for layout modification, offering both space savings and shorter installation times.
Key features of the BS-F series include a non-rollover cam and roller design, providing higher torque capacity and reduced operating temperatures; a labyrinth seal to block dust and moisture intrusion in abrasive conditions and a double-lip oil seal and multi-temperature grease system for operation across a wide temperature range (–55°C to +150°C). The grease lubrication system prevents the risk of oil leakage – a common failure in conventional backstops.
Unlike locally manufactured alternatives, where consistency is often a challenge, Tsubaki backstops are produced entirely in Japan, ensuring world-class manufacturing standards, uncompromising quality control and dependable performance in critical applications.
Through the use of circulating grease, BS-F clutches benefit from internal lubrication that reduces friction and extends service life. Maintenance intervals are extended to 7 500 – 8 000 hours, with Tsubaki-approved EP-free grease and a dedicated maintenance kit recommended for ongoing performance and protection.
To further enhance customer value, BMG has invested in local stockholding of Tsubaki backstops, reducing the typical lead time of up to 24 weeks and enabling rapid turnaround to meet urgent demand.
The complete range of Tsubaki power transmission solutions is available through BMG’s national branch network, which also provides technical support and a 24-hour backup service to ensure customers get the most out of their investment in safety and reliability.
