New phone app promises greater design, management and maintenance functionality of belt-drive systems on the go

LUXEMBOURG CITY, 2024 – Gates (NYSE: GTES), a leading global provider of application-specific fluid power and power transmission solutions, has launched a mobile version of its award-winning Design PowerTM platform. Design PowerTM Mobile combines all the existing functionality of the Design Flex Pro system with a new Facility Management module and four support tools, allowing monitoring, measurement and maintenance of belt-drive systems on the move.

The Facility Management module offers users a comprehensive overview of their operations, allowing them to keep detailed design reports, receive maintenance and replacement alerts and record service dates across operating sites.

In addition, the app includes four support tools for hands-on, real-time maintenance work. These include a sonic tension meter, sound meter, a flashlight rpm meter and a distance measurement function. The sonic tension meter uses the phone’s in-built microphone to measure the belt’s frequency so providing a gauge of its tension, letting the user establish whether the belt is running smoothly or requires rectification. The sound meter also uses the phone’s microphone to check if noise levels are within the permitted health parameters, while also helping to locate possible worn or damaged components.

The flashlight rpm meter uses the phone’s camara flash as an adjustable frequency strobe to estimate the speed of the belt drive without needing to resort to any other system information, making speed checks quick and easy. Similarly, the camera can be used to measure the centre distance of the belt drive, making hard-to-reach drives instantly accessible.

With the launch of Design PowerTM Mobile, Gates has increased its suite of software tools for belt-drive system design and operation, having recently overhauled its Design PowerTM platform, which comprises two applications – Design Flex ProTM and Design IQTM.

Design Flex Pro enables engineers to determine every potential two pulley belt-drive solution for a set of specific parameters, improving the efficiency and accuracy of the design process.

Design IQ offers a versatile and intuitive way of designing for stock and non-stock lengths and pulley sizes with customised sprockets and conditions for more complex serpentine and multi-point belt drives. The module can also determine the recommended installation tension, offer drive geometry output, point out the major causes of flex-fatigue and calculate belt widths or number of strands.

Gates Design Power Mobile can be downloaded for free from the Apple and Android stores and is available in 15 different languages. The programme is also available for computer. For more information on the tool, visit Gates.com/DesignPower.
