Mozambique’s ongoing fuel supply crisis is emerging as a key risk to participation at the Maputo International Fair (FACIM), the country’s largest trade and investment exhibition, scheduled for 31 August to 7 September.

Business leaders warn that fuel constraints—alongside foreign currency shortages and high operating costs—could affect both exhibitor turnout and investment levels at the annual event.

Amâncio Gume, vice-president of the Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA), said companies are likely to adopt a more selective approach to participation.

“The macroeconomic environment remains challenging, with constraints on access to foreign currency, financing limitations, high operating costs and periodic fuel supply disruptions,” he noted.

Logistics and mobility risks

Mozambique has faced weeks of fuel shortages, with petrol station closures, rationing, and transport disruptions reported nationwide—largely linked to global supply pressures following instability in the Middle East.

These constraints pose logistical challenges for exhibitors, transport operators, and visitors travelling to the fairgrounds in Marracuene district, Maputo province.

Mitigation measures underway

Government officials say contingency plans are being implemented to safeguard attendance.

Alfredo Nampuio, representing the Ministry of Economy for the event, confirmed that dedicated public transport systems will be deployed to ease access to the venue and reduce reliance on private fuel consumption. Additional measures include decentralised parking and traffic management strategies.

Strong turnout still expected

Despite current headwinds, organisers project:

  • 30 participating countries
  • 55,000 visitors
  • 6,500 foreign exhibitors

The event is expected to facilitate business deals across key sectors, including energy, agro-industry, and manufacturing.

Economy Minister Basílio Muhate emphasised the need for stronger public-private collaboration, positioning FACIM as a leading regional platform for trade and investment.

Strategic positioning

Held under the theme “Digital and Energy Transformation”, FACIM 2026 aims to deepen market linkages, expand B2B engagement, and address structural constraints such as access to inputs, technology, and distribution channels.

Brazil will participate as guest of honour, while Niassa province will be featured domestically.

While fuel shortages present a near-term operational risk, FACIM’s scale and strategic importance suggest participation will remain resilient—albeit more targeted and results-driven.
