Etihad Airways is expanding its global network in a major push to strengthen trade and passenger links between Asia and Africa, with new routes launching from October and November 2026.

Key highlights of the expansion

  • China expansion (5 destinations): Shanghai, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Guangzhou
  • Africa expansion (6 destinations): Accra, Harare, Asmara, Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Lagos
  • All routes will connect through Abu Dhabi, reinforcing its role as a global transit hub.

Etihad Airways is expanding its international network with new destinations across China and Africa as part of a wider strategy to strengthen trade and passenger connectivity between the two regions. From October and November 2026, the airline will add five Chinese cities, including Shanghai, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, as well as six African destinations, namely Accra, Harare, Asmara, Kinshasa, Lubumbashi and Lagos. All of these routes will be routed through Abu Dhabi, reinforcing the emirate’s role as a key global transit hub.

The expansion is closely linked to Etihad Cargo’s broader logistics strategy rather than being purely focused on passenger travel. The new routes are expected to support increased movement of high-value and time-sensitive goods such as electronics, e-commerce shipments, pharmaceuticals, perishables and industrial products. This aligns with growing demand for more efficient and diversified supply chains between Asia and Africa, especially as global trade patterns continue to shift.

By strengthening connectivity through its Abu Dhabi hub, Etihad Airways is aiming to improve transit times, enhance network reliability and facilitate stronger trade and investment flows between the two regions.
