LH Marthinusen (LHM), a division of ACTOM, is nearing completion of two 30 MVA transformers for a mining operation in Botswana. The project is aimed at strengthening power infrastructure to support increased production and improve operational reliability at the site.
The mining company required an upgraded solution after its existing power systems struggled to meet growing demand. Ageing infrastructure and the need for stable, high-capacity electricity created operational risks, prompting a search for a more efficient and reliable power solution. Following a competitive tender process, LH Marthinusen was selected based on its technical expertise, industry experience, and ability to deliver customised solutions.
The transformers have been specifically engineered to handle high-voltage requirements while ensuring efficiency and long-term performance. They are designed to integrate with the mine’s existing systems, meet strict safety and environmental standards, and support sustainable operations. The project has also been developed within tight timelines to align with the mine’s production targets.
According to company representatives, manufacturing is now in its final stages, with only minor work remaining before Factory Acceptance Testing. Preparations for delivery and installation are already underway, with close coordination between the engineering team and the mining operation to ensure a smooth rollout.
While the remote location of the site presents potential logistical challenges, the company has implemented supply chain measures and is leveraging local expertise to manage delivery and installation effectively. At this stage, no major risks are expected to delay completion.
Once operational, the transformers are expected to significantly improve power reliability, reduce downtime, and enhance energy efficiency at the mine. These improvements are likely to translate into lower maintenance costs and increased productivity, supporting the operation’s long-term performance.
The project highlights LH Marthinusen’s role in delivering reliable power solutions to the mining sector and underscores the importance of modern infrastructure in supporting mining growth across Southern Africa.
