The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has exported 456,000 tonnes of refined petroleum products to African markets, marking a significant milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s role in regional energy supply.

The exports, comprising 12 cargoes sold by international traders, were shipped to several countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ghana, and Togo.

Refinery Scales Up Exports After Reaching Full Capacity

According to the refinery, the shipments include Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and follow its ramp-up to 650,000 barrels per day capacity in February 2026.

The products were sold on a Free on Board (FOB) basis, with traders responsible for transporting the fuel to destination markets across Africa.

This achievement highlights the refinery’s ability to meet and exceed domestic fuel demand, while expanding its footprint in international markets.

Strengthening Africa’s Energy Security

The refinery noted that its growing export capacity is helping to address long-standing supply challenges across the continent.

By supplying Euro 5 standard gasoline and diesel, the facility is contributing to:

  • Improved fuel quality in African markets
  • Reduced dependence on long-distance fuel imports
  • Lower logistics and transportation costs
  • Enhanced regional energy security

Historically, many African countries have relied on imported fuels of varying quality. The Dangote Refinery aims to shift this dynamic by supplying cleaner, locally refined products.

Expanding Trade Links Across Africa

The export of refined petroleum products is also expected to strengthen trade relations between Nigeria and key African economies.

  • By improving proximity-based supply, the refinery helps:
  • Reduce supply chain disruptions
  • Stabilize regional fuel markets
  • Support economic integration across West, East, and Central Africa

A Strategic Milestone for Nigeria’s Energy Sector

Commissioned in May 2023, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery is one of the largest refining facilities in the world and a cornerstone of Nigeria’s strategy to become a net exporter of refined petroleum products.

Its growing export activity signals a shift from fuel import dependency toward regional energy leadership.

Conclusion

The export of 456,000 tonnes of fuel marks a major step in positioning Nigeria as a key supplier of refined petroleum products in Africa. As production scales and trade networks expand, the Dangote Refinery is set to play a central role in transforming the continent’s energy landscape.
