New Delhi, November 24, 2025 – RITES Limited, the engineering consultancy under India’s Ministry of Railways, has announced plans to export its in-service diesel locomotives to South Africa for the first time. Chairman and Managing Director Rahul Mithal confirmed the move, marking a significant milestone in the company’s international expansion strategy.
With Indian Railways nearing full electrification, RITES sees strong potential in repurposing its seasoned diesel locomotives, which retain more than 15 years of operational life. The company has secured a contract to supply 18 modified locomotives, specifically adapted to South Africa’s Cape Gauge tracks, which differ from India’s Broad Gauge system. The first delivery is scheduled for the fourth quarter of FY26.
Mithal emphasized that the initiative reflects RITES’ broader strategy to tap new markets abroad. Beyond South Africa, the company is exploring opportunities in neighboring countries, leveraging its expertise in rail engineering and asset management. Domestically, RITES continues to expand its portfolio, with recent achievements including the design of passenger facilities and the export of coaches to Bangladesh.
The South Africa contract underscores RITES’ growing role in global rail supply chains, positioning the firm as a key player in extending the lifecycle of locomotives while supporting infrastructure development across emerging markets.
