Zambia’s export sector is showing signs of resilience, with agricultural products playing a central role in the country’s trade recovery. Despite global economic uncertainties and fluctuating commodity prices, Zambia has managed to increase its non-traditional exports, particularly in the agri-food segment.

According to trade data released today, Zambia’s exports of groundnuts, soybeans, and horticultural produce have seen double-digit growth compared to the same period last year. This uptick is attributed to favorable weather conditions, improved extension services, and targeted government incentives under the Export Diversification Strategy. The strategy aims to reduce Zambia’s reliance on copper by promoting high-value crops and processed food products.

One of the standout performers is the soybean sector, which has benefited from rising demand in regional markets such as Zimbabwe, Malawi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Zambian exporters have also tapped into niche markets in the Middle East, supplying organic groundnuts and dried mangoes to health-conscious consumers. The government has facilitated this by streamlining export permits and investing in cold chain infrastructure to preserve product quality.

However, exporters face persistent challenges, including high transport costs, limited access to finance, and inconsistent border procedures. To address these, the Ministry of Commerce has partnered with private logistics firms to pilot a digital trade corridor that reduces paperwork and expedites customs clearance. Additionally, the Zambia Development Agency is working with cooperatives to improve packaging and branding, ensuring that Zambian products meet international standards.

As Zambia continues to navigate the complexities of global trade, its agricultural sector remains a beacon of hope. With sustained investment and policy support, the country is well-positioned to become a regional hub for agri-exports, contributing to job creation, rural development, and foreign exchange earnings.
