Tanzania is advancing infrastructure development on Zanzibar’s Fumba Peninsula as part of plans to establish a specialised financial and technology hub aimed at attracting international investors and businesses.

The development is being undertaken within the Fumba Free Economic Zone, an initiative managed by the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Agency. Construction activity across the peninsula includes upgraded road networks, utility distribution systems and designated commercial plots intended to accommodate future businesses.

The master plan incorporates mixed-use development, public access roads and dedicated commercial areas, bringing together business facilities, residential properties and civic infrastructure.

Infrastructure and urban development

Road construction is progressing across the peninsula, with paved dual-carriageway routes and roundabouts designed to improve access and accommodate increased traffic as development expands.

Infrastructure works also include site preparation, utility installations and internal access networks to support future phases of construction.

The nearby Fumba Town development forms part of the wider urban expansion, with local and international engineering teams involved in construction management and design. Plans also include high-rise buildings, including timber-structured developments intended for residential and commercial use.

Silicon Zanzibar targets international investment

The Silicon Zanzibar initiative is intended to attract international technology companies, businesses and skilled professionals to the island. The initiative seeks to support investment through incentives, including tax benefits and streamlined business approval processes.

The peninsula’s location near maritime access points and existing transport corridors is also expected to support its role as a commercial and investment destination.

The development forms part of Zanzibar’s broader efforts to diversify its economy through infrastructure investment, technology and financial services. Continued construction across the Fumba Peninsula is laying the groundwork for future commercial and mixed-use activity.
