Volkswagen Group Africa has reached a major production milestone, with the 500,000th unit of its current Volkswagen Polo rolling off the assembly line at its Kariega plant in South Africa.
The milestone vehicle—a crystal ice blue, right-hand-drive Polo—has been produced for export to the United Kingdom, one of the company’s key international markets.
A Global Export Success Story
Production of the current Polo model began at the Kariega facility in 2021. Since then, the plant has strengthened its position as a global export hub, becoming the sole exporter of the Polo to 38 international markets in 2024.
The Kariega plant has a long-standing legacy, having produced four generations of the Polo over the past 30 years, making it a cornerstone of South Africa’s automotive manufacturing sector.
Scale, Precision and Workforce Excellence
Manufacturing a single Polo is a highly coordinated process, taking approximately three days to complete. Each vehicle is assembled using around 1,400 individual components and involves the efforts of nearly 1,985 workers throughout the production cycle.
This level of operational precision underscores the plant’s efficiency and the expertise of its workforce.
Strong Export Performance
To date, more than 2 million Polos have been produced at the Kariega plant, with exports accounting for a significant share. Of the total production, over 1.4 million units have been shipped to international markets, while nearly 600,000 units have been sold locally.
Germany currently leads as the largest export destination, followed closely by the United Kingdom.
Award-Winning Model
The Polo continues to perform strongly in international markets, earning recognition as one of Europe’s top small cars. It was recently named ‘Best Small Car’ in a major European reader survey and also secured top honours in the small car category in a leading automotive publication’s 2026 awards.
A Proud Milestone
According to VWGA, the achievement reflects decades of dedication and expertise from its workforce.
The company emphasized that the milestone highlights the strength of its production and logistics teams, whose continued commitment has enabled the Polo to maintain its global reputation for quality and reliability.
