Emerging blueberry producers in Zimbabwe are positioning themselves to supply high-value Chinese fresh-fruit markets as growers expand plantings and navigate evolving trade and phytosanitary regulations.

Several commercial growers and grower groups are shifting from traditional horticulture crops into blueberries, attracted by the crop’s strong export prices and relatively fast returns on established high-density plantings. Investments in greenhouse and netting systems help extend the harvest window and meet quality expectations for firmness and shipping resilience required by distant markets.

Trade and regulatory landscape To access China, exporters must meet stringent phytosanitary requirements and cold-chain standards. Growers are coordinating with private exporters and government agencies to secure necessary certification and to align packing-house protocols with importer expectations. Temporary trade measures and import checks can create delays; growers advocate for streamlined inspection processes and targeted support for export infrastructure.

Smallholder inclusion and contract farming Large-scale farms are increasingly establishing contract-farming arrangements with smallholders to scale supply quickly while transferring technical know-how on pruning, irrigation and integrated pest management. Contracts often include inputs on credit, extension support and guaranteed offtake, although equitable pricing and timely payments are essential for long-term trust. Extension services and visible market premiums are key incentives for smallholder adoption.

Risks and sustainability Key risks include market concentration if too much capacity targets a single destination, currency volatility affecting profit repatriation, and the need to manage water use responsibly where irrigation is intensive. Stakeholders recommend diversifying export destinations, investing in local cold-chain improvements, and adopting water-saving irrigation technologies to balance growth with resource stewardship.
