Johannesburg, South Africa – South Africa is taking a leadership role in sustainable rare earth mining by deploying circular economy models that recover critical minerals from industrial waste and byproducts. The initiative is part of a broader push to reduce the environmental footprint of rare earth extraction.
New technologies are being piloted to extract neodymium, dysprosium, and other rare earths from tailings and slag, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional mining. Researchers at the Council for Geoscience say the approach could position South Africa as a global supplier of ethically sourced rare earths.
“By turning waste into resource, we’re not only reducing environmental harm but also unlocking new economic value,” said Dr. Lerato Mokoena, lead scientist on the project.
The initiative supports South Africa’s green transition goals and responds to growing international demand for responsibly mined minerals used in electronics, wind turbines, and electric vehicles.
