Brussels, Belgium – According to Afreximbank’s latest African Trade Report released on September 28, the European Union remains Africa’s largest export destination, accounting for 31% of total exports in 2024. China follows at 12.6%, while intra-African trade continues to grow, reaching $208 billion last year.
Southern Africa leads in regional exports, driven by mineral commodities, agricultural products, and manufactured goods. The report highlights the growing role of SMEs and agribusinesses in regional supply chains, supported by AfCFTA’s tariff reductions and logistics improvements.
The report also calls for increased investment in trade finance, digital customs systems, and regional transport corridors to sustain momentum. Exporters are urged to leverage preferential access agreements and diversify product offerings to remain competitive in global markets.
