The Federal Government of Nigeria is making bold strides in clean energy deployment through two transformative initiatives—Phase IV of the Energising Education Programme (EEP) and the Agricultural Centers of Excellence (ACE)—both spearheaded by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
Energising Education Programme (EEP) – Phase IV
Objective: Provide reliable, clean energy to federal universities and a teaching hospital to enhance learning, research, and healthcare
Institutions Benefiting:
• Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
• University of Nigeria, Nsukka
• Federal University, Wukari
• Federal University, Dutse
• University of Benin
• University of Ibadan
• Obafemi Awolowo University
• University of Lagos
• One unnamed teaching hospital
Key Features:
• Solar hybrid power systems via Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contracts
• Reduction in diesel generator reliance
• Lower energy costs and improved power stability
• Support for renewable energy training and STEM initiatives
Impact: Over 89.6 MW of solar capacity is being deployed across 37 universities and 7 teaching hospitals nationwide, with Phase IV continuing this momentum.
Agricultural Centers of Excellence (ACE)
Objective: Boost agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods using solar-powered tools.
Components:
• Solar-powered agro-processing equipment (e.g., mills, irrigation systems)
• Deployment in resettlement areas and shelters for displaced populations
• Support for farmers and agro-processors to reduce diesel dependency
• Integration with climate resilience and food security strategies
Broader Goals:
• Enhance food security by reducing post-harvest losses
• Enable productive activities in rural and conflict-affected regions
• Promote inclusive development and economic restoration
Strategic Synergy
Together, EEP and ACE reflect Nigeria’s commitment to:
• Decentralized clean energy access
• Climate-smart infrastructure
• Inclusive growth through education and agriculture
